The men's club volleyball team concluded an excellent season in early April by claiming the Division II Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) championships held in Maryland April 4.
The team won the regular season crown after going 14-4 in the EIVA North division which includes University of Rochester, Oneonta, Fredonia, Siena, Albany and Syracuse's "B" team, among others.
Senior captain Tim Price was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament, as Brockport came from behind to defeat Virginia Tech's "B" team in the semifinals. They lost the first game 25-20, before winning the final two, 25-22 and 15-8.
"I think the biggest part of our victory was the new offense we created the week before the tournament," Price said. "It had the opposing defenders so confused because everyone was attacking from different positions. Our defense was also great led by Andrew Laluk."
That put them in the finals against Liberty, where they also lost the first game 25-23, forcing Brockport to win the final two games to win the championship. They won the final two games, 25-20 and 15-12.
"I thought it was great that we won Division II as huge underdogs," Price said.
Price and fellow senior Terry Brogan were named to the all-tournament team.
"[Brogan] was our strongest hitter," Price said. "He moved around the net and hit balls instead of just hitting out of the middle," Price said.
The team did not make the trip to nationals due to insufficient funds, but does return a solid core next year, only losing Brogan. And although Brogan was a key part, they return the rest of their rotation.
"We've improved tremendously over the past three years," Price said. "Hopefully next year we have enough funds to make it to nationals, and win that."
