Review: Ke$ha Animal

By now you've probably heard "Tik Tok" and either loved it or hated it. Like a dirtier, and drunker, version of Lady Gaga or Britney Spears, Ke$ha has taken an in-your-face approach to music that is featured on her debut CD, Animal.
Animal is full of songs that have the same key elements that made "Tik Tok" a hit with a dance beat, Auto-Tune and witty, sarcastic lyrics.
With a fun, flirty, tipsy collection of songs, the album features 14 electro-pop songs that seem to blend with one another.
Though most the songs are catchy on their own, when listened to as an album, there isn't much distinction between each. On the ballad "Stephan" Ke$ha relies only on singing (though still with Auto-Tune and a dance beat) and the song comes out sounding like she is trying too hard.
Almost the entire album focuses on alcohol, boys and partying. Lyrics like "Wine stain on the sofa, we don't care/I threw up in the closet and I don't care" ("Party at a Rich Dude's House") and "And now we lookin' like pimps/In my gold Trans-Am/Got a water bottle full of whiskey/In my handbag/Got my drunk text on/I'll regret it in the mornin' ("Take it Off") help show off Ke$ha's "I don't give a damn" attitude.
Ke$ha knows her strengths and shines when effortlessly gliding between singing and talking. Definite highlights of the album include "Blah! Blah! Blah" ft. 3OH!3, "D.I.N.O.S.A.U.R.," "Backstabber," and of course, "TiK ToK."
"Backstabber," a song about girls who backstab their friends, is catchy with lyrics like, "You have got a set of loose lips, twisting stories all because you're jealous/Now I know exactly what you're all about/And this is what you're all about/Girl, your such a backstabber" delivered in the same half-sung, half-spoken manner that made "Tik Tok" catch on like wildfire.
Ke$ha's Animal starts off slow, but grows on the listener, minus a few tracks. Though Ke$ha sounds like a bratty, drunk teenager with her debut album, the songs are extremely catchy and after a second listen, the album as a whole sounds better.
That being said, all the sound effects, Auto-Tune and sarcastic lyrics do tend to blur together, creating what feels almost like one giant song.
It's not great, but not downright awful. Critic's Rating: 2 of 4 stars.

I couldn't agree with you more. As if Lady GaGa's songs didn't all sound the same--although she is way more interesting than Ke$ha. Seriously, my friend had me listen to "Take it Off" last weekend and I confused it for "Tik Tok" she is just that much of a sell out. (Continued…)
